BlueReg Group Glossary A ATMPs
ATMPs
ATMPs are a new category of medicinal products that have been developed to treat, prevent or diagnose serious conditions with unmet medical needs. ATMPs are based on cutting-edge technologies such as gene therapy, cell therapy and tissue engineering.
FAQs
There are three categories of ATMPs: gene therapy medicinal products, cell therapy medicinal products, and tissue engineering products.
1. Gene therapy medicinal products make use of genetic material to treat or prevent diseases. One example is a product that uses viruses to deliver healthy genes into cells in order to correct a defective gene. Another example is a product that uses DNA strands to silence genes that are responsible for causing cancer.
2. Cell therapy medicinal products make use of living cells to treat or prevent diseases. One example is a product that uses stem cells to repair damaged tissue. Another example is a product that uses white blood cells to fight infections.
3. Tissue engineering products make use of artificial or natural materials to replace or support damaged tissue. One example is a product that uses a collagen scaffold to repair a torn ligament. Another example is a product that uses an artificial heart valve to replace a defective one.
ATMPs are a subset of biologics, which are medicinal products that are made from living cells or microorganisms. Other examples of biologics include vaccines, blood products, and allergenic extracts.
ATMPs are different from conventional drugs in several ways. First, ATMPs are made from living cells or microorganisms, whereas most conventional drugs are small molecules that are synthesized in a laboratory. Second, ATMPs usually target specific cells or genes, whereas most conventional drugs act on general cell processes or disease pathways. Finally, ATMPs are typically administered by injection, whereas most conventional drugs are taken orally.
ATMPs are used to treat, prevent, or diagnose serious conditions with unmet medical needs. ATMPs hold promise for the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including cancer, genetic disorders, and cardiovascular diseases.

Orphan drugs are those that have been developed to treat rare diseases. ATMPs may be orphan drugs if they have been developed to treat rare diseases.
